THE LAKE ORION HONEY COMPANY
About Swarms: Honeybees propagate their species by recognizing that the capacity of their current home - generally 2-3 cubic feet in size - has reached about 2/3 or more of full occupancy. The Queen then departs with roughly half the population after they gorge themselves with honey. The Queen lands on a tree branch or other overhang and the rest of the population surrounds her to protect her, while 50 or more "scouts" set about finding that perfect space which is generally a cavity in a tree, or a house, barn, etc. That perfect space is again, 2-3 cubic feet. They return to the colony and tell others, and if those other bees are convinced that it is a good location, they tell more still of it, and when 50% +1 bee are convinced, the entire group makes a bee-line to the new home and quickly begins building honeycomb in order to store food and provide a place for the Queen to begin laying eggs.
